We’re for Namibians: Johanna Swartbooi
Miss Namibia 2025 Johanna Swartbooi shares her journey of persistence, cultural pride and empowering young Namibians through authenticity and creativity.
Raised between Cape Town and Namibia, Leon started out climbing the corporate ladder in IT. But despite the success, something was missing. It took the loss of his father, and the courage to start over at 36, for Leon to finally answer the voice inside: “This is not you.”
He cast in his savings, cleared out his garage, and began building a new life by hand – one stitch, one bag, one piece of furniture at a time. What began as a personal creative outlet became Leon Engelbrecht Designs: a studio rooted in traditional craftsmanship, timeless design, and Namibian pride.
Leon’s products are made the old-school way – every stitch done by hand using age-old techniques. He chooses slowness in a world of speed, quality in an era of convenience, and soul in a market of sameness. “I want people to buy once, and keep forever,” he says. His commitment to sustainability and craft extends to his team too – training and uplifting Namibians, passing on skills that spark independence and pride.
Nature is Leon’s muse. From the ochre tones of the desert to the textured stillness of the bush, Namibia’s landscapes shape his aesthetic. “There’s a rawness here that inspires me,” he says. “It’s honest. It belongs.”
At the core of his brand is a belief that we all carry something unique. That’s why his motto is Be Your Own Breed – a mantra born from a journey of overcoming doubt and choosing authenticity.
Leon Engelbrecht is a designer, a maker, and a mentor. But most of all, he’s proof that it’s never too late to become the person you were meant to be.
